Coconut

Description

Coconuts are drupes derived from the coconut tree (Cocos nucifera), a palm tree thriving in hot and humid climates worldwide. Despite the common assumption, coconuts are not tree nuts and are often misclassified as such. The majority of coconut production, over 70%, originates from tropical regions in Asia. Coconut allergies are relatively uncommon, with only a few recorded cases. Nevertheless, the recognition of coconut as a tree nut by the FDA for labelling purposes has amplified its significance as an allergen source. Though infrequent, all documented instances of coconut allergy have involved anaphylactic reactions, which can be life-threatening if not promptly and appropriately addressed. Some cross-reactivity has been observed between coconuts and tree nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts, macadamias, and walnuts. However, individuals with tree nut allergies do not exhibit a notably higher susceptibility to coconut allergies. Another documented cross-reactivity for those with coconut allergies is lentils.
